Russ to the rescue?

Russell Wilson has been reluctant to run much of the season.

That started to change in the second half here, as he picked up some vital yards on several scrambles in the third quarter.

His scrambling ability created the Seahawks’ first touchdown of the night, as he escaped pressure and bought time for Tyler Lockett to find a sliver of an opening in the back of the end zone. Wilson threw a fastball that Lockett hauled in for a 14-yard TD, cutting the Seahawks’ deficit to 13-7.

The Seahawks will, of course, need more of that — much more of that — here in the fourth quarter if they are to complete this comeback.

Homer happy

Marshawn Lynch got the crowd on its feet with his 15-yard run into the open field midway through the third quarter, helping to set up that first score of the game for Seattle.

Lynch had 23 yards on four carries on that touchdown drive.

Just as impressive for the Seahawks is the play of rookie Travis Homer, who in his first career start has 47 yards on eight carries. Homer has looked spry, and he certainly doesn’t shy away from contact.

Homer also has three receptions for 14 picks, including third-down dump down catch from Wilson to pick up a key first down on the scoring drive.

Bad to worse

As the 49ers’ offense took the field, the CenturyLink crowd was as loud as it’s been all night after the Seahawks pulled within 13-7 midway through the third quarter.

The 49ers’ response quickly silenced the home crowd, as Jimmy Garoppol0 found his fullback, Kyle Juszczyk, wide open for a 49-yard gain down the San Francisco sideline.

To make matters worse, Seahawks veteran linebacker Michael Kendricks was injured at the end of the tackle. He had to be helped off the field with a knee injury and his return is questionable.

Lynch has muted impact so far

A short-yardage play is where you thought Lynch might make his most impact.

But it didn’t work late in the first half as Seattle handed it to him on fourth-and-one at the 31. No one was fooled, and Nick Bosa broke through to stop Lynch for no gain.

That gave Lynch 7 yards on four carries — 5 on his first carry of the game — for the half.

Defense not totally breaking

It could have been a lot worse than 13-0 as the 49ers had 220 yards on their first three possessions.

Give Seattle credit for at least making two big plays to force field goals instead of touchdowns, especially the hit by Marquise Blair that forced a fumble that the 49ers recovered but behind the line for a first down on the final series.

A 17-0 deficit would have been really tough. At 13-0 there at least feels like some life.

Seahawks WRs struggling

Seattle’s receivers have just three receptions for 35 yards, all when matched up against Ahkello Witherspoon.

Seattle has yet to throw a pass in the direction of Richard Sherman, who has stayed on the left side but has often been matched up against Tyler Lockettt.

The 49ers seem to be playing at times as if their CBs won’t get beat, playing coverage defenses. So far, it’s working.

Beast Mode engaged

The first-quarter numbers for Marshawn Lynch in his return to the Seahawks: Three snaps, one carry, 5 yards.

But it was the loudest cheer for 5 yards you’ll ever hear.

Lynch received a rousing ovation from the CenturyLink Field crowd when he was introduced during pregame warmups, and he walked out of the tunnel alongside rookie Travis Homer and veteran backup Robert Turbin.

Homer got his first career start and he had just 5 yards on his three carries in the first quarter.

The Seahawks punted on their first two possession and trail 10-0 entering the second quarter.

Diggs out

The Seahawks, certainly, are hurting on offense. They lost their top three running backs to season-ending injuries earlier this month and they’re playing tonight without their best offensive lineman, Duane Brown.

But perhaps the most glaring absence tonight is Quandre Diggs, the free safety who made his Seahawks debut against the 49ers in their first meeting on Nov. 11. His veteran influence was a steadying force for the Seahawks’ secondary, but he is out for the second week in a row with a high ankle sprain.

Lane Hill, starting in Diggs’ place tonight, simply does not have the same speed or savvy, and that has already shown up in two big plays for the 49ers.

Brown down

Veteran receiver Jaron Brown has been ruled out for the remainder of the game with a knee injury he appeared to sustain on the game’s first drive.

That leaves the Seahawks with just four healthy receivers tonight, and two of them are rookies: Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, David Moore and John Ursua.

Ursua, a rookie seventh-round pick out of Hawaii, is active for just the third time this season. Before tonight, he had played just four offensive snaps this season.

No Diggs, no Willson

Two regulars the Seahawks listed as questionable for Sunday’s game — tight end Luke Willson and free safety Quandre Diggs — were among the team’s inactives for Sunday’s game.

Diggs will miss his second straight game with a high ankle sprain suffered in the win at Carolina on Dec. 15.

Diggs did not practice during the week but did some running and also worked out a little on the field prior to the game.

But he was ruled out, and the team will hope he can make it back for the playoff game.

Lano Hill is expected to start in his place.

Willson was reported by the NFL Network to have fallen awkwardly and hurt his hip late in practice Friday.

Willson was downgraded by the team as questionable on Saturday. He worked out on the field prior to the game but was then declared inactive.

Seattle had earlier ruled out left tackle Duane Brown (knee) and receiver Malik Turner (concussion).

Also out due to injury was offensive lineman Ethan Pocic (core).

And ruled out to meet the gameday max of 46 were defensive tackle Bryan Mone and linebacker Dekoda Watson.
